About MetricName

Domain appraisal, by the numbers.

MetricName started with a frustration Eric ran into while trying to work out whether the domains sitting in his own registrar account were worth anything — and whether the automated appraisals he ran them through could be trusted. Every appraiser gave a confident number; none of them would say where it came from. Two tools would value the same domain an order of magnitude apart, and there was no way to see which factors either one had actually weighed.

So he built something better. MetricName is a free, no-account-required appraisal that gives you a valuation by the numbers — every factor that moves the number, named and priced on the page — and is honest that a domain appraisal is an estimate, not a quote.

Founder, MetricName

Eric builds free calculation tools for a living and has bought, held, and let expire more domains than he'd like to admit. He got tired of appraisal tools that hand back a single unexplained number — usually attached to a pitch to buy a listing or a premium report — and built MetricName to be the opposite: the full factor breakdown, on the page, for free.

How it works

You type a domain and get back a price range, not a single number. The range is built from what similar domains have actually sold for, then adjusted for the things that move a price — how long the name is, whether it's made of real words, which extension it uses, whether it has hyphens or digits in it. Every one of those adjustments is listed on the page with the dollars it added or subtracted, so you can see how the number was reached and disagree with any step of it.

Nobody can compute a domain's “true” price — there is no such formula, and any tool implying otherwise is selling something. So where our figures come from real data (recorded sales, registrar pricing, extension market data) we link the source. Where we picked a number ourselves, we label it a judgment call rather than dressing it up as measurement. And when a domain simply isn't worth anything, the tool says so instead of flattering you.

Our commitments

  • Free, no sign-up required. Every tool on this site is free to use with no account, subscription, or paywall.
  • We show our work. Every tool explains its methodology, cites its sources, and surfaces assumptions — so you can verify the logic, not just trust the output.
  • Honest about limitations. Where precision is limited or assumptions are required, we say so. Tools compute; they don't replace professional judgment.
  • Kept current. Tools that use figures that can change over time carry a “last reviewed” date and are treated as an ongoing maintenance responsibility, not a one-time build.
